The Magdalene Question

“In your darkest times, when you feel most alone, remember that love is always there.  You might not feel it, might not see it, but ask for it.  And it will come”.

This work explores the enduring human search for connection, meaning and belonging. Drawing upon the archetype of Mary Magdalene as a symbol of wisdom, resilience and transformation, the figure stands not as a historical subject but as a contemporary presence - one who embodies the courage to confront absence, uncertainty and emotional truth.

Rather than presenting love as sentiment or romance, the painting considers love as a fundamental human force: the desire to be seen, understood and connected. The figure's unwavering gaze invites viewers into a moment of reflection, asking what remains when certainty dissolves and whether love can still be found within vulnerability.

Colour functions as an emotional language throughout the work. Layers of violet suggest transformation and inner knowing; aqua evokes intuition, openness and heartfelt communication; pink introduces tenderness and the revelation of hidden emotions; white creates passages of clarity and possibility.
