I Remember

Painting inspired by the life of Matty Mills:

The painting is large scale, in fact the largest in the exhibition.  It needed to be, to honour the light I feel that shines from you.  Throughout all you shared with me, and all you have experienced, the thing that stood out the most for me was your overwhelming sense of optimism.  Along with that your immense pride and connection to culture, community and heritage.  And I wanted to honour these.  I chose to paint looking up through trees because this is something you mentioned you love, that it grounds you and the sense you feel that when you do this, it makes the challenges of your life feel less monumental, small even.  Additionally, trees represent an immense connection to country, ancestors and spirit.  I chose the blue sky colour to represent your Nan, she was such an important part of your life, and you mentioned she had blue eyes.  The yellow represents the yellow rose that you planted in every house you moved to, in remembrance of your Dad.  The orange was included because you love it.  I used dots for foliage, to create a link to indigenous art and storytelling.  You are a beautiful soul Matty, created in part because of your childhood, but mostly because of your unwavering commitment to living a 'better', joyous life.

• Blue: nurturing, trust, protection, calm, sincere
• Orange: emotional strength, frees the spirit, gut instinct, self-respect  
• Green: harmony, compassion, tolerance, heart, stability, renewal
• Yellow: joy, memory, clarity, enthusiasm for life
• Lime: hope, lessons of the heart, completion
